VIDEO: Western Province has lost the services of Justin Geduld for the remainder of the Currie Cup after he underwent surgery earlier this week.

The Sevens star made his return to XVs last weekend against the Cheetahs but left the field after 12 minutes due to a hard knock in the face.

Geduld had cheekbone surgery and according to Labeeb Levy, the skills and performance analyst at Western Province, the centre will most likely not see any more Currie Cup action this season.

The Capetonians travel to Johannesburg to face the Lions in Round Seven of the Currie Cup on Saturday.

“He will be lucky to make it to the back end of the competition,” Levy told a media briefing on Wednesday.

Western Province’s options at centre are growing thin but Levy said the young Joshua Boulle is an option while he also mentioned that Wandisile Similane is set to make his return.

According to Levy, the majority of the side came through the clash with the Cheetahs unscathed.

“There are guys that got hurt, some of them were worse than others.

“Stassie [Hendre Stassen] was a bit sore but he should be fine, Gary [Porter] has been training but he also had some issues.

“But generally, the team has a good bill of health,” Levy commented.

Captain Willie Engelbrecht soldered through the game but had some issues with spasms and Levy says he will be ready to face the Lions this weekend.

“Willie is injury-free, just some knocks. We also thought initially it was quite bad but it was back spasms from running long in the rain and he took a knock as well.

“But he will be fine from a medical perspective.”

Another WP star who is out due to injury is Jonathan Roche, who scored a hat-trick of tries against the Griffons.

The young prospect is out for the season following a serious foot injury.

“He might come in later in the year, potentially to become part of the URC squad,” Levy confirmed.

News around the availability of Steven Kitshoff is still sketchy with Levy confirming that Western Province needs feedback from SA Rugby in terms of his selection.

“Kitsie is still a SA Rugby medical project and they need to guide us as to what they want us to do with him in terms of availability.

“So we are still awaiting SA Rugby’s medical feedback in terms of guidance on whether we can select him.

“He is training, but nothing has been finalised yet so we can’t say from a selection perspective.

“We haven’t selected a team yet, so we can’t commit to whether he will be selected this week because it hasn’t been finalised yet,” Levy revealed.

Western Province is currently third in the Currie Cup standings with 14 points. They have won two out of their six outings and face the second-placed Lions.
