The Blitzboks produced a dominant attacking performance to thrash Japan and secure their place in the Olympic Games medal playoffs on Thursday.

Ryan Oosthuizen and Shilton van Wyk scored two tries each as the Blitzboks claimed a 49-5 victory over Japan, bouncing back in style from a winless first day of the campaign on Wednesday.

The big win sees the Springbok Sevens secure a place in the medal playoffs as the 8th-ranked team and Philip Snyman’s side will take on either New Zealand or Ireland in the quarter-finals at 9pm on Thursday night.

Going into their final pool match needing a 21-point victory, the Blitzboks made a flying start as they raced into a 21-0 lead thanks to tries from Impi Visser, Zain Davids and Shilton van Wyk in the first four minutes.

Oosthuizen then went over for a quickfire double just before the break, his second coming from an unselfish assist from captain Selvyn Davids, to make it 35-0 at half time.

Japan hit back with a try after the break, but the Blitzboks quickly settled any nerves of a slip-up, with Rosko Specman charging from inside his own half to score, before Van Wyk wrapped up the win with his second try.
