After a remarkable international season representing the Springboks, fullback Aphelele Fassi returns to the Hollywoodbets Sharks with a renewed sense of purpose and excitement.

As he steps back into the familiar colours of black and white, Fassi reflects on his exciting Rugby Championship win, and shares what he’s looking forward to the most in the upcoming season.

Fassi! Welcome back and congratulations on a stellar international season. How are you feeling after what was a great run of appearances for you in the Bok jersey?

I’m feeling good and it’s good to be back with the Hollywoodbets Sharks. Obviously, I’m grateful and humbled for the opportunity that I got to be able to play for my country.

Could you share some key learnings and takeaways from the Rugby Championship?

There’s a lot that I’ve learnt during my time with the Boks, especially in terms of attack, like when you’ve lost momentum and when you have momentum. And how to organise a stronger defence. I have learnt a lot from the Boks coaching staff and hope to bring that into my game time at the Sharks.

What are you most looking forward to about returning to The Sharks after your international season?

I am most looking forward to seeing everyone again! We have a very close connection amongst the players and the coaching staff. I am also super excited about playing in front of our faithful fans again as it is always special putting on the Sharks jersey on a match day!

After ending the previous season on a high winning the EPCR Challenge Cup, which games are you most excited about for the 2024/25 season?

I’m excited to play all the games that I am selected to represent the black and white jersey with pride. But I am especially looking forward to the derby games as the age old rivalry between the SA clubs is special. And I can’t wait for the Investec Champions Cup to kick off and go against the best clubs in the world!

What does it mean to you and the team to see a full stadium at Hollywoodbets Kings Park?

It means a lot to us and we feed off the energy of the fans in the crowd. It’s always special to run out on a game day and look up at all our fans in the crowds who support us!

You have captured the hearts of rugby fans across SA, could you tell us a little bit about your online fan club, ‘The Church of Fassi’?

Yeah, I saw that online and it gave me a good laugh. I think it’s very special and humbling to see people who support me like that and that they enjoy the things I do things on the field.

Lastly, what is your current favourite pre-game song currently on your playlist?
