Head coach Graham Rowntree says South African speedster Thaakir Abrahams will be “brilliant” for Irish giants Munster next season.

Abrahams joined Lyon last season but played just 12 games out of a potential 32 for the Top 14 strugglers.

Despite not enjoying the best season for the French outfit, the former Junior Springbok earned comparisons to two-time World Cup winner Cheslin Kolbe, with his ability to play on the wing and at fullback.

The 25-year-old still has his best days ahead of him and scored six tries for Lyon, after dotting down five times in the 2022-23 URC campaign for the Sharks.

Speaking in a wide-ranging interview with the Irish Examiner, Rowntree emphasised the thorough research conducted prior to signing the versatile Abrahams for next season.

“We’ve done our research on him,” Rowntree said. “A bit of a left-field signing but not for us. Ian Costello, our head of rugby operations, and Philip Quinn, our COO, did extensive research.”

Rowntree highlighted the importance of finding a quality outside back who could seamlessly integrate into the team: “We’ve been looking for a quality back-three signing, but we’ve also focused on his ability to settle in Limerick and fit in with the squad.

“We even spoke to his school rugby coaches and others who have worked with him. I think he’ll be brilliant for us.”
